The Scottish Opthalmic Oncology Service Logo

Personal Introduction
I am Ewan Kemp, I am the Service Director of the Scottish Ophthalmic Oncology Service. I am assuming you are accessing this site because either you, a relative or friend have had reason to wish more information on either an eye cancer or a suspicious lump that either your Doctor, your Optometrist or your Ophthalmologist has discovered and wished an opinion from my Service at The Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow. The Service is run as a National Service fully funded by the Common Services Agency of The Scottish Executive. This means that the National Health Service for Scotland supports this Service fully with direct funding and it therefore does not depend on individual Health Boards or Hospitals. It allows Scotland's Health Service to focus resources, which are very expensive, in one place and also allows specific personnel to develop experience in what is a very rare tumour type with an incidence of only 7 per million. There is an average of 35-40 individuals within Scotland developing a choroidal melanoma and a further 45-50 developing specific soft tissue tumours around the eye. With the resources focused on one delivery site, it allows a level of expertise to develop within the personnel group involved.

The remainder of this website will display the range of clinical facilities and the personnel involved in the delivering the service. This ranges from Scientific personnel involved in investigation and research, clinicians involved in delivering care and nurse counsellors who support the patient and relatives from their initial contact with the clinic through to their initial management and continuing with their support in the regular reviews that are required following treatment.

I would like you to take your time to review our site and understand that all the individuals involved in the Service are aware of the impact that a cancer diagnosis can make to both patients and relatives. We would hope that the information available enhances your knowledge and understanding of our Service and the way it is delivered and I would also hope that our staff can answer your questions when we meet you at the clinic.

If any problems arise while you review our website or you wish to pass any comment please do not hesitate to contact our department at the address supplied.
